Ask a Career Advisor: Should I Get a Second Job?
Have you ever contemplated the idea of getting a second job? You’re not alone. According to our 2024 Hiring and Job Search Outlook Report survey, 12.7% of candidates plan to search for a second job this year.
The allure of earning additional income, developing new skills, and expanding your professional network can be enticing, and getting a second job is more feasible now than ever with the popularity of remote work and flexible schedules. However, it's important to carefully consider the pros and cons before taking the leap into dual employment.
We asked Lori Cole, Certified Career Coach and Advisor at iHire, to explain the factors you should keep in mind to help you make an informed decision.
Pros of Getting a Second Job
“One of the most obvious benefits of taking on a second job is the potential for increased income,” Cole said. “It can provide the financial boost you need to achieve your goals, whether it’s paying off debt, saving for a big purchase, or investing in your future. Plus, a second job can serve as a safety net during these uncertain times if you were to lose your primary employment.”
A second job can also offer an opportunity to gain new skills or further develop existing ones.
“Being exposed to different industries or roles will greatly benefit your career,” Cole added. “Expanding and diversifying your skill set is a great way to make yourself more marketable.”
Working in a different job or industry instantly opens doors to new connections as well. Building relationships with professionals outside of your current workplace can lead to valuable networking opportunities, mentorship, and even future career advancements.
Cons of Getting a Second Job
There are downsides to consider before getting a second job, too.
“The biggest risk you take is your current employer could legally fire you for taking on a second job,” warned Cole. “Carefully review your organization’s policies related to secondary employment, such as noncompete clauses.”
If you are able to take on another job without getting in hot water with your primary employer, there are additional risks.
“By working two jobs, you could spread yourself too thin, quickly burn out, and end up performing poorly at one job or even both,” Cole said. “Your work-life balance and physical and mental health could also suffer if you’re not intentional about setting boundaries for yourself.”
Furthermore, a second job may impact your tax situation. For example, the additional income could put you in a higher tax bracket, and you may ultimately make less than you think.
What Should You Consider Before Getting a Second Job?
“Before diving into a second job, take a realistic look at your current commitments, responsibilities, and personal capacity,” advised Cole. “Do you truly have the time and energy to take on additional work without sacrificing your health or neglecting other important areas of your life?”
Striking a balance between your primary job, second job, personal life, and self-care is crucial. Consider how a second job will affect your overall well-being and ensure you have the necessary support systems in place to manage your responsibilities effectively.
