Responsibilities:

  • Directly report to the Executive Sports Editor, collaborating closely to achieve the digital sports vision and objectives, ensuring alignment with overarching brand and business goals.
  • Help lead the digital production team of editors, producers, and writers, providing strategic direction, feedback, and editorial guidance to optimize content production across platforms.
  • Partner with the Executive Sports Editor and the Post Sports Plus team on the development and evolution of our paywall product, ensuring a seamless integration of digital strategies and content.
  • Organize the various arms of the daily production process including social, video, and audience development to ensure optimal coordination, efficiency, and high-quality output.
  • Train existing staff on the latest skills required to maximize digital efficiency and foster continuous improvement in digital storytelling and audience engagement.
  • Bring elite knowledge of sports news and an understanding of how content engagement is evolving at a rapid pace, staying ahead of trends to keep the brand first in class.
  • Collaborate with other departments to execute top-level visions and plans for the newsroom, driving the digital sports agenda across all platforms and ensuring a cohesive approach.
  • Establish and implement KPIs and actionable daily data reports, using insights to refine strategies, enhance content performance, and measure success.
  • Collaborate with the Sports Social Director to execute on content that engages across platforms and keeps a cohesive brand identity.
  • Oversee digital coverage plans for major sporting events, breaking news, and trending topics, ensuring a high level of responsiveness to the unpredictable sports news cycle.
  • Mentor and guide editors, reporters, and producers at all levels, tailoring your approach to suit individual skill sets and experience levels, fostering an environment of growth and development.
  • Exhibit keen news judgment, with experience framing and positioning stories in the most engaging way for readers to drive traffic and audience engagement.

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience in digital journalism, with at least 5 years in direct editorial and personnel management, including leading and developing high-performing teams.
  • Expert ability to mentor and guide editors, reporters, and producers at various skill levels, ensuring top-tier editorial output and professional growth across the team.
  • Deep knowledge of the sports landscape, with an elite understanding of how content engagement is evolving across digital platforms, including SEO, social media, and analytics.
  • Strong experience balancing breaking news, feature writing, and long-term content strategy, while staying flexible in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment.
  • Proven experience in content management systems, web publishing, and editorial workflows that optimize efficiency and quality.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and headline-writing skills, capable of producing engaging content that resonates with diverse audiences.
  • Strong collaboration skills work effectively with cross-functional teams, including video, podcast, design, and audience development, to create compelling, multimedia-rich content.
  • Be available to work nights, weekends, and be on-call for major stories, events, and breaking news, understanding that the sports news cycle is constant and unpredictable.

Note: The New York Post adheres to a hybrid work model. This role will be expected to report into the office 4 days per week (subject to change depending on business needs).

Pay Range: $140,000 - $175,000
